Scorched oak dish
The oak that was used for this particular piece had been weathering outside for a good ten years before making its way indoors to dry. I love any excuse to use my adze and it was perfectly suited here to getting this dish ('dish' is used here in a very loose sense of the word) started. I'm always amazed at how quickly it chews through its work and it took no time at all to get the rough shape. Originally I'd intended to keep the natural oak colours but after a while it seemed like the shape was lacking that extra bit of interest I was looking for so I chanced a 'burning'! In terms of colour, the results were of course charred but the shape now had a wonderful natural flow to it which seemed befitting of this pieces origins.
