Scorched wood: Shou Sugi Ban



I've always looked on and admired other peoples work when they've taken a blowtorch to whatever it is they've been making. It just seems like such a counterintuitive thing to do; finish a piece then toast it. But actually it's a bold and beautiful way of working that has so much history behind it. I also love that you're never quite sure what you're going to end up with in terms of a finished shape. All the natural woody tones are obliterated and replaced with a deeply textured, rich charring. The edges change, the feel of it changes and obviously the colour changes. Different woods burn in different ways and I'm starting to understand that it's not quite as simple as firing up your flame and blasting the wood from all angles until its nice and crisp.


This method has legs and you're going to see a lot more of it emerging from my studio.
